My Students
Remember having to make a poster or a display project and fretting about creating a title or finding images to make your creation pop? My students struggle with the same issue -- except most of them don't have the resources at home or at school to create what they consider to be a worthy project.
I teach at a Title I school in Manhattan in which most students don't get to take an art class until 12th grade.
In my 19 years of teaching, I've found that students produce some of their best work when they are allowed to be creative and really show what they know. The irony is that they lack the supplies to create their best work. This is what I would like to change.
My Project
For this proposal, I am requesting a variety of colored paper and cardstock to be used with our Cricut, an electric die-cut machine. The machine connects to a computer to cut out virtually any shape you can think of or create. From poster displays to manipulatives used in our STEM unit, the possibilities with the Cricut and the right paper are limitless. By providing the proper paper for my students to use, they will really be able to dig into what we're studying and create relevant pieces of artwork. For example, during our unit on Shakespeare's Macbeth, students will calculate, create, and build their own version of the Globe Theater. With your donation of paper and cardstock, they will have the materials needed to hone their engineering skills as they build the landmark. Projects like this not only reinforce the skills students are learning in math and science, but also helps make literature more tangible for students through differentiation.
Infusing art and STEM concepts into the curriculum is so important for my students.
When they are given the opportunity to showcase their learning through creative means, the end result is always outstanding. By providing my classroom with a selection of paper, cardstock, and some Cricut tools, students will be able to use their creative talents to make meaning.
