My Project

I have enjoyed teaching 4th and 5th grade students for the past 13 years. I am always looking for ways to update and improve curriculum to make it more relevant to my students. After seeing my daughter participate in an art program this summer, I got the idea of bringing cardboard construction into my classroom. Specifically in the unit I will be teaching about Ancient Greece. In the past, student groups have drawn their own city-states on paper, but I wanted to make this experience more three dimensional.

The opportunity to use cardboard and various tools to construct their city states will allow students to combine engineering, civics, problem solving and teamwork.

The cutting materials I am requesting will help students quickly and efficiently manipulate the cardboard. Glue guns are the best way to attach cardboard for stability while duct tape is another excellent attachment method. The gardening gloves will keep student hands safe from the heat of the glue guns. The paint sticks are an effective and less messy way for the student to add decorative elements to their creations. The books will be available for myself and the students for reference on creating with cardboard.

Using a readily available product for construction will encourage students to use their imagination and creativity to come up with new and innovative designs. Working in three dimensions should also help students visualize their community plan and make decisions about how they want their city state to function. To create an effective finished product, they will need to clearly communicate, share ideas, and compromise with the other members of their group. I fully believe that this is an opportunity that students will love and glean a wealth of information.
