Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Words are the key to unlocking any language. When students learn word parts like prefixes, suffixes, and root words they are able to increase their vocabulary exponentially.
My students attend a Title I school in Florida where 97% of the student population receive free or reduced lunch.
Many come to school unprepared lacking basic supplies such as notebooks and pencils. The majority of my 5th grade students are reading at least one to two grade levels below 5th grade. I teach a variety of students from English Language Learners to students with exceptionalities.
My Project
My goal through this project is to use the card stock to create a variety of word sort activities that will target the vocabulary skills that my students need. These sorts will be focused on prefixes, suffixes, root words, synonyms, antonyms, and words that have multiple meanings. My students will be able to learn things such as the difference between 'bear' as in the animal and 'bear' as in to carry something. These vocabulary word sorts will be used during small group centers so that students will have the opportunity to manupulate the words individually and with a small group. This hands-on experience with matching word parts will engage students in learning and make it memorable and exciting.
My goal is to help all of my students become better readers and equip them with the vocabulary they will need to better comprehend what they are reading.
With your donation to this project, you will provide these amazing 5th grade students with interactive vocabulary activities that will expand their vocabulary and therefore increase their reading comprehension.
