My Project
Labs are an integral part of every life science class. Documentation of the scientific process, tracking procedures, observations, and drawing conclusions from what happened in the lab, specifically what went wrong in the lab, is an invaluable skill in self reflection and critical thinking that all scientist have to develop. It is often assumed that scientists will know how to write scientifically, as if the skill is merely diffused through osmosis into the students' brain. However, this is far from the case. Science writing is a completely foreign language. A fine balance between clarity and scientific literacy, students need ample practice in documenting their scientific journey.
Carbon copy lab notebooks are an essential component of college level labs.
The semi-permanance of their writing and the collected composition of their work serves two purposes. One, the carbon copy preserves their mistakes but also their changes. By saving their errors they have a historical record to return to for their analysis. Second, the canonization of all their labs in a single notebook preserves and documents their progression from the start of the school year to the final lab they enter into that notebook. It's a love hate relationship that everyone has with their notebook, immortalizing their flaws and failures while highlighting their growth and triumph!
