it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a low-income neighborhood. More than 90% of students in my school are on free and reduced lunch programs. I have a combination of regular students with low reading and writing proficiency, language learners, and ESE students.
While most of them lack basic literacy skills for a high school setting, I have always been intrigued at how much they enjoy grammar lessons "in real time," the kind that they see could help them finally understand language in reading and help them develop their writing.
They really pay attention to the old "white-board interaction" that occurs when I write sentences on the board and they identify grammar or usage aspects of the lesson and we come up with our own scenarios and examples. They get so much more out of this than writing exercises on their own or trying websites multiple choice activities. The need the personal guidance and the richness of conversations while writing.
My Project
With online learning, a document camera could help students access reading and writing content with real time support. Students will be able to interact with me, while together, we develop sentences, clauses, and whole paragraphs.
I have had this plan in my head for months, since writing over pages of text while sharing a screen and interacting with students has proven impossible.
The real time experience of writing, correcting, and erasing text (as on a white board in the classroom) is lost in a remote learning environment, but a document camera could do the trick!
