My students need crayons, newsprint paper and scissors for crafts in the music room as well as games for centers like Candy Land, Connect Four and Blocks.
My students don't bring their school supplies with them to music class. My students need a variety of supplies to be used as a way to demonstrate tangibly what they are learning in music class.
My students are excited about learning everything they can about music.
More than anything, they enjoy every opportunity to share their work with others. Regularly scheduled performances take care of almost all of our sharing needs, but often the most meaningful way for students to share their work is by providing ordinary, traditional school supplies that can be used during music class to create a tangible record of the learning that happened that day.
My Project
My students will use craft materials like crayons, newsprint paper and scissors to create listening guides to help them remember the music we explore through listening. Additionally, students will use the craft supplies to create both iconic and traditional music notation during music composition units. They can take their products home after each class and share their musical experiences with their parents. Additionally, the games listed, (Connect 4, Candy Land and block kits) will be used to create music composition center activities. Once the games are received, I will add rhythms to the game pieces and then the new musical version will include in class performances of the rhythms created by students during the play of the games.
This project will facilitate opportunities for students to create concrete expressions of abstract learning.
Music is difficult to capture. Often recordings don't do justice to the live experience. However, despite the temporal nature of musical experience, it is important to guide students through "capturing" the music by providing opportunity to create physical representations of what is heard and created. Activities fostered by these materials serve as a foundation to music literacy.
