Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The resource room is home to specialized instruction for reading, writing, and math. My students have different disabilities that impact the acquisition of skills necessary to be successful in their educational career.
In addition to barriers due to their disabilities, many of my students also encounter barriers resulting from language development and socioeconomic status.
My classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including other health impairments, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities. Many of my students struggle with basic phonics and number sense. 90% of our students are Latino. Special education teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction in math, reading, and writing without the requisite tools to teach students.
My Project
My students are working on understanding symbolism. The art supplies will help my students apply their understanding of symbolism used in their literature by being able to create a visual representing the symbolism used in their books. Allowing students to visualize and create an image representing the symbolism used in their literature will help them identify and discuss the symbolism in writing. The students are very excited to create a piece of art using symbolism from their novels. The acrylic paint and canvas will allow and encourage students to portray their symbols in a piece of art that they will later convert into a piece of writing.
My students need art supplies to depict their literature's symbolism.
Having student created images representing the symbolism used in their literature will serve as a resource to guide my students writing on symbolism. My students need concrete, tangible, and hands on activities to help them understand difficult concepts. Incorporating art into writing activities will help my visual and kinesthetic learners.
