Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our classroom camera surprised all of us by lasting for 2 years. It's the longest time a small piece of equipment with students being 100% accountable has survived. Lately the flash & zoom buttons have broken and we've discovered a crack in the screen. Pictures are dull, dark, and now hard to view.

I teach a dynamic group of avid learners in the nation's capital of Washington, D.C.

The majority of the student body receives free lunch with the rest receiving reduced rates. Our location is a bit less than desired with adult stores, bars, wine/spirit retail, and police activity seasoned on every block. Students are able to view their environment daily as we walk to another school to use their resources for recess. Despite their outside climate, my students are very enthused about the aspects of learning and achieving. They enjoy taking pictures of their school as well as pictures celebrating their achievement. They support each other during award presentations and speeches, and on field trip expeditions our behavior management has been successful because everyone wants to have an opportunity to "take a picture", create a caption, and/or ask a question to an official to assist with their reports. Sharing these pictures with family has put an even bigger smile on their faces.

My Project

Family is a key part to our school community and there are times when they cannot come to our school to support their children. So we have come up with an idea to show our families the results of our hard work, determination, and fun times. This is especially helpful to students without photo albums at home and for those who cannot afford to take pictures on picture day. Capturing moments in education has had many advantages. Recording features allow students to view personal speeches in English class and document group presentations in science and math class, all of which they can share with family at home. My visual learners enjoy the benefits of a camera to reach learning goals. Using pictures instead of worksheets allows them to make connections in identifying with sequence, captions, and predicting outcomes. A camera provides a link to what we learn and will remember in class and interpret it to our parents and family members who are not able to join us in our learning.

A camera in our classroom appeals to our learning styles and allows us to track our learning process to reflect and share with family and friends.

It's amazing how such a compact gift can produce enormous results in our classroom and assist us with self-esteem, learning, and socializing. Please help my students to continue to capture their moments in education and provide a link to shared family experiences by donating a camera to our class!
