My Students

Hi! I am the teacher of a class full of 30 bright and independent 3rd grade scholars! The scholars in my class come from the inner city of Chicago, in which most receive free or reduced price lunch. Our charter school serves scholars in grades K-6 and provides the academic foundation to earn a college degree. With this in mind, scholars are pushed to their limits and given rigorous academic work and feedback to prepare them for success. We are a level 1 plus school, and pride ourselves on having high standards and expectations for our scholars!

To break the cycle of poverty, college readiness is crucial.

These scholars are exposed to many things at such a young age. With coming from such a low income background, these children are denied crucial necessities like technology. Communicating with the outside world in this day and age is something these children need to experience. Through technology, my scholars will be able to communicate, conduct research, and see the world in a whole new way!

My Project

In today's world, technology is everywhere. From social media to ebooks, everywhere you turn there are technological advances waiting to be used. These resources allow for culture rich experiences, exploring new ideas, but more importantly, learning. Technology has come such a long way, and in the 21st century, education and jobs are being digitalized. Students at young ages are now being exposed to new experiences and ways of learning through technology. Online books, interactive websites, and computer navigation are things that students need to in order to success.

My scholars are more noticeably engaged in their learning through the use of technology.

More than 70% of my scholars are below grade level when it comes to reading and mathematics. It is very difficult getting them to love to read and enjoy it. Many think they will never be able to read, and give up on themselves constantly. When given the time to read, my scholars were not motivated until given technology. I brought my iPad into my class room recently to see if one of my scholars would read e-books, and he immediately was addicted. From swiping through pages, clicking on difficult words that would be read aloud, this scholar's reading level shot through the roof! It was amazing to see how a tablet changed his way of reading.

I believe having the access to extra tablets in my classroom would help students love to read. My scholars need to know they can do anything they set their minds to!
