My Students

One of my favorite quotes is "Be yourself. Everyone else is taken," by Oscar Wilde. This permeates my classroom as I encourage students to explore movement possibilities that bring out their true nature and character. I would love to have them create a photo essay of their final movement project.

I have a very diverse student population that includes a wide range of ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds.

About half of my students are first generation Americans. Many speak two languages that are reflective of their diverse backgrounds. I would say that the largest growing population is Asian but we have students that are Italian, Greek, Latino, Irish, African-American, Afghani, Arab, Jewish, Indian, and Pakistani. We have a population of over 900 students. I see 700 students per week for dance. When in my class they are fully engaged and enjoy the challenge of being physical and learning about different dance forms and choreography. I also have a number of self-contained classes as well as inclusion classes and I find that many of these students benefit immensely in their academics by being able to express themselves through movement and creating choreography.

My Project

My students need a color printer, toner cartridges, and print supplies in order to be able to print out pictures of themselves in action during dance class for portfolio documentation. Students document their work every day by taking photographs of each other when we have showings at the end of each class. These photos go into creating everything from booklet documentation, to poster representations, to bulletin board projects, to portfolio building for each student trying to get into a performing arts Middle School and then later High School. My Kindergarten students recently created an animal alphabet warm-up routine which we photographed and made into a booklet for each student. Students fill in the letter of the alphabet and the animal portrayed in the photo. The booklet becomes a photo documentation of their month long project and the movements they created become their warm-up routine for dance class.

Donations to this project will aid in my students' ability to make use of technology to create something personal and immediate.

I already have them videotaping and photographing all of the time. It is a great way of keeping them engaged and interested in the material as well as documenting their progress and being able to self as well as peer assess their physical and creative growth throughout the year.
