My Students

A desire to learn. A willingness to explore. An enthusiasm for knowledge. An excitement for unknown opportunities. These qualities, and more, are critical to first generation college students; their naivety to the world before them lends an inspiring creative energy for exploration.

We are at a K-12 school in rural Montana with approximately 170 students.

Though our school is small, our students are fortunate to have many opportunities to support education and achievement. With the help of our GEAR UP grant, students in grades 7-12 are able to explore, research and view post-secondary information from a young age. With these students, college visits, post-secondary interest assessments, guest speakers and academic enrichment within the classroom are just a few of the many enhancements to their educations. Being residents of a high poverty town, many of our students do not have the opportunities to explore post-secondary interests outside of the school setting. Most would be first generation college students and lack parents with ample knowledge of navigating the higher education system. Along with these potential setbacks, we also have students who have a strong interest in pursuing training after high school and have made goals to accomplish just that.

My Project

As part of our GEAR UP grant, we take each grade level, 7th-12th, on a separate college campus visit each year. By the time a student is a senior, he or she will have visited a minimum of six college campuses. This exposure is essential to an understanding of college life, expectations and opportunities. These students, many of whom have never set foot on higher education grounds before, seem to soak up the information with such ease and eagerness. The fact that we are giving the advantage seems to breed their hopes and dreams. They are ever grateful for the chances to view these programs and reflect this in their work and responses post-trip. By purchasing video recorders, the students would be able to share their experiences and interest with their families and with their peers. Students would use the camcorders to record parts of each campus visit and then create a presentation to reflect the setting and highlights.

With funds from the donors, our student can continue to promote life-long learning by presenting their new knowledge to families, students and other people in our community.

Their explorations and recordings of the events can help to inspire and educate many.
