Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As the librarian and the technology coordinator, I teach information literacy and technology skills to over 500 K-8 students.
Our students are eager learners who are capable of engaging in learning on a whole new level if given the chance.
We are a Title I, local community school located on the southwest side of Chicago. 95% of our school population is considered low-income. Most of our students do not have access to the newest and most advanced technology at home, and many can not regularly afford Internet connection. Thus, while they are at school they are eager to use technology in any way they can. They love coming to the lab and using the computers!
My Project
I have 32+ students interested in taking a digital photography and editing class that I would like to offer in the spring. Our school currently owns a couple of point and shoot cameras but not enough to use with a class of 32. I teach technology to 7th and 8th graders and many have been begging me to teach a digital photography and/or digital art class. We need cameras to make this class possible.
Photography can help my students find their voice and identity.
It will give them a tool for creative self-expression. It is difficult to engage students learning when they have no genuine interest in the subject matter, and they have expressed a genuine interest in learning how to capture an image and turn it into something special! I want my students to learn how to take more than a selfie with a camera phone and let them get creative with digital editing in Pixlr and some online programs that I hope to purchase.
