This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In a couple months, the first grade students from my class will be learning about the life cycle of a plant and the needs of a plant (i.e. roots are associated with the intake of water; soil and leaves are associated with making food from sunlight). In order to meet this standard, I will be having the students learn how to plant seeds and flowers and keep a journal of their individual plant's growth. They will be exposed to the tools needed in gardening, increase their vocabulary and learn the life cycle of a plant by having this experience.
It would be unfortunate for my students if they could not go through this experience because most of the students live in an apartment building. They will not get a chance to ever garden, since most of their parents have to maintain two jobs in order to pay rent. My school does not have a PTA where the parents help out because they just don't have the time. They are too busy working. The teachers at my school try their best to expose the students to as much as possible but my school also lack in science materials for the primary grades.
Some of the things my class needs are tools for gardening, for example, shovels, spade shovels, rakes, gloves, soil, and pots. Also, my class will need seeds and flowers to beautify our grade level garden. I would need enough items to meet the needs of 19 students.
Once again, this experience would completely benefit my low income students because it would be a hands-on project that most of these students would never get a chance to do in their own homes. It will help them master their grade level standard in science and it is known that when people kinesthetically do something, it is more likely to be retained in their brains than by just reading about it.
