This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are curious, creative, and eager to engage in hands-on learning—but our classroom lacks the tools to make language learning feel alive and immediate. I’m seeking 7 Polaroid instant cameras to help my students document cultural experiences, practice language in real-life contexts, and transform our classroom into a vibrant, student-created museum of Hispanic culture.

With these cameras, students will embark on photo scavenger hunts for cultural items, create “photo stories” in Spanish, document class events (like Día de los Muertos altars or cooking demos), and even conduct short interviews or skits.

Instant photos will become interactive displays—captioned in Spanish, of course—that bring vocabulary, grammar, and culture together in meaningful ways.

In a world flooded with digital content, there’s something powerful about holding a photo in your hand—especially one you took yourself. These Polaroid cameras will give my students a chance to slow down, observe, reflect, and express themselves creatively in Spanish. For English learners and visual learners, the instant, tangible nature of the photos provides valuable scaffolding. For shy or hesitant speakers, having a fun, low-stakes creative task can help build confidence.

Students will use the cameras across thematic units—family, food, traditions, travel—and connect what they’re learning to their own lives and communities. For example, during our “La familia” unit, students can create a family tree collage with labeled photos of themselves and classmates. During Hispanic Heritage Month, they might photograph items that reflect their own cultural backgrounds or interview a family member in Spanish and include a photo as part of the presentation.

This project blends culture, creativity, and communication—the heart of what makes Spanish class special. Your support will give my students the tools to not just learn about the Spanish-speaking world, but to experience it, reflect on it, and share their own stories through it.
