My students need a classroom set of materials, such as paper, books, markers and games, that will not only enable them to be creative, but will guide them to work together more collaboratively.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Did you have books at home growing up? A lot of my students do not even have them at home. I always encourage them to borrow from my library or the school library so they can experience the wonder of books every day. They pick what they want to read, and they truly enjoy it.
My students come from all backgrounds, but some of them live in poverty.
They go to school with other students who may be more privileged and they feel left out. They are embarrassed that they do not have materials at home to complete creative projects, so they rarely discuss their home lives. I want them to have as enriching an experience at school as possible! I want my students to have the resources they need day in and day out. I want them to be able to take things home throughout the year and not have to ask their hard-working parents to buy them anything. They should be able to use whatever they need at school all the time. They should also be able to read books that will challenge them and will interest them in things they may never have had the chance to learn about before.
My Project
Some of the materials I requested are a class set of some of the best books for 1st and 2nd graders. These are critically acclaimed books that are recommended for students to read in order to have a broader knowledge of various topics. I also would like to have more markers, crayons, pencils, and colored pencils so that the students can buy some and keep those at home for personal use. I also want to have different types of construction paper so that we can have more creative projects in the classroom that they would truly enjoy. Math materials are included as well because our new math curriculum will not be providing materials to us and we would have to use share materials with the rest of the school.
I really want my students to be able to write and draw about whatever they feel.
They are often unable to express themselves verbally, but I want them to immerse themselves in books and projects to help them express themselves, not only to me, but to each other.
