Captivating Minds for Capital Trip

My students need maps and copies of books that specifically give factual information on the city of Washington D.C. to build children's background understanding. My students need copies of a number of major publications that focus on preparing a child for a visit to Washington D.C. The books are children's guides, a scrapbook guide, and books on how to act and behave on a field trip. The maps will be used to help student's plan how to navigate around Washington D.C.

Help prepare students for a memorable, safe, and educational trip to our nation's capital, Washington D.C. I teach fifth grade and for the last three years have led fifth graders on a three day tour of our nation's capital. Our fifth grade team works hard all year to fundraise and prepare our low income students for the trip of a lifetime.

Many of our low-income students have never left North Carolina, let alone traveled hundreds of miles to Washington D.C., for a three day adventure. Therefore, we must teach them everything they need to know before we go from how to act in a hotel to the significance of the Vietnam memorial. In fifth grade the students spend 6 weeks preparing for the trip by studying a unit on government and Washington D.C. As part of this unit they explore everything from the three branches of government to the significance of the Vietnam Memorial to the depth of information about Arlington Cemetery.

Though the students are fully engaged in this unit, the teachers struggle to find enough resources to support their interests and to provide information for their inquiring minds. Before the trip we will use the books daily in our lessons and in student research to better understand the history and present offerings of the city and of our government. During and after the trip students will use the resources to help them complete their "D.C. Journal," a 24 page interactive journal they must complete about the monuments, memorials, museums, sights, and sounds. Also, this past year I had a student ask, "Mrs. H, do I need to bring my own towels and sheets to the hotel or are they already there?" Many of our students do not know what to do away from home, because they lack the real world experiences available to their more affluent peers. This severely limits their cognitive abilities when reading or doing other activities, because they cannot relate to the content. By donating to our project our fifth grade staff will use the maps to show the students how to map out their days, the guide books to plan everything from meals to monuments, and the pre-written scrapbooks to compare their trip.

Your donation will help ensure that our students are well prepared mentally and behaviorally for a trip that is unlike anything they have had or will ever experience. The six week unit leading up to the trip, with your help, will be more enriching, purposeful, and informational. When eleven year olds ride through the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia on a charter bus and yell, "Oh, wow, look it's a cow! I've never seen one of those before," you realize the importance of taking students on such trips as this one to Washington D.C. so that they have the appropriate background knowledge to be successful in school and in life.
