This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 3rd grade classes are full of wonderful, curious children. Many of them come from schools that did not support their creativity or that did not give them the necessary skills to be successful, due to severe underfunding. Several of my children were left behind or forgotten. Some of them even came from private schools that were really more of a day care. This is the first real school experience for them, and while they are so excited and appreciative, they are also struggling.

They are eager to broaden their horizons and continue learning everything that they didn't have the chance to learn the past few years, but many of them have one thing holding them back: they never learned how to read.

They are enthusiastic and hard working, but they have fallen behind due to lack of resources at their past schools. My school is brand new, so we have accepted students from all areas around the school. It is a community where many of their parents do not speak or read English, so they need all the support we can give them at school.

My Project

My students will be able to complete intervention activities in my classroom daily, while other students are completing independent station activities. They will all be able to take turns using the computers, primarily for Reading. Many of the students are between a Kindergarten and 1st grade reading level in 3rd grade, and our online Intervention program in Miami-Dade County (I-Ready) can work at their specific level. They need severe intervention, and without computers, it proves to be more difficult. Many of them do not have Internet access at home, or have to share the family computer with more than one sibling. We will also be beginning a free before-school tutoring program, which would also be a time to use the computers.

We are optimistic that with proper support, intervention, and technology, our students will become proficient in Reading!
