Captain Underpants and Empathy

Help me give my students Captain Underpants and other graphic novels to help them manage their social emotional needs through relevant literature that helps them think about their choices.

My Project

It is imperative for my students to have a healthy sense of self and be able to identify their emotions. My students experience grief at such a young age and are expected to "just get over it". Hopefully, this unit will encourage my students to express themselves and channel their emotions and imaginations through creative expressions.

Captain Underpants and other graphic novels will be the spring board into this unit.

In my opinion, poetry writing and art provides an outlet for my students to process and communicate how they feel. George and Harold the main characters in Captain Underpants are indeed creative writers and thinkers. Students will create comic book style poetry using various themes extracted from reading Captain Underpants and viewing video segments. This will lead us into performance and visual art activities.
