Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach at a Title 1 school in one of the highest-crime areas of Albuquerque, where all of my students come from extremely low-income households. Many have very little, so every resource and classroom supply provided for them is deeply appreciated. My students are always so grateful.
Each year, parents ask if they need to start saving money for caps and gowns, and every year, I have to tell them no—because we won’t be wearing them.
It breaks my heart to say this, but I also can’t ask my families to spend their hard-earned money on something that may not be financially feasible.
I would love to have a set of caps and gowns for my students to borrow each year so they can experience the joy of their first graduation—their first celebration of their accomplishments as they begin their educational journey.
I also plan to personally take their graduation photos, have them developed, and frame them as a special keepsake.
With your help, we can make this moment even more meaningful for my students—both now and in the years to come!
