We need a press drill, a metal cutting band saw & scrap metal to manufacture a plastic shredder & an extruder which turn waste plastic into recycled raw material for both art & Expedition projects.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It is a true pleasure to introduce to you some of my "hard-core" and dedicated after school, Visual Art students from Capital City Public Charter School: Ana Nguyen, Daniel Ruiz, Dona Anderson and Brynae Harrod.
These students embody an energy, enthusiasm and commitment to improve our school community that impacts everyone around them and beyond. They are examples of leadership, and a constant source of inspiration. They keep me engaged and motivated to provide them with as many opportunities possible to channel their energy and visions of a more just, fair, and equitable world.
In this project they will be involved in the manufacturing of a plastic shredder prototype, as well as an extrusion machine prototype, both of which will be used to recycle the waste plastic we generate in our school and transform it into raw material for art making.
During the process students will develop reading skills that will enable them to understand technical drawings and systems of representation. They will also learn metal manufacturing processes such as: cutting, welding and mechanical assembling of metal. Additionally, students will learn basic wiring skills.
Finally, we will focus on developing collaboration skills that broaden and deepen the understanding of problem-solving strategies, demonstrate teamwork by making decisions as a group, and encourage individual responsibility through personal productivity by delegating specific tasks to each person.
In Their Own Words
Our first goal is to create an after school club that focuses on building two machines: a plastic shredder and a plastic extrusion machine. Once these machines are completed, our second goal is to write and submit a proposal to the school's administration that outlines an internal system for recycling all plastic waste generated by the school, with the intention of turning the recycled plastic into raw material for projects in our Open Studio, Makers Space and classroom Expeditions.
This project will provide us with an opportunity to educate other students of the horrific environmental impact plastic waste is having on our planet. We will then be able to train them to operate these machines so that we may all play an active role in finding a solution to plastic waste.
The potential for this project is immense and we hope it will continue to grow and evolve in the years to come. There are several other machines students can learn to build (a plastic compression machine and a plastic injection machine, to name a couple) that would enable them to expand and improve a recycling program within the school.
We are trying to bring attention to the amount of waste we as a community produce, and not only demonstrate how this "trash" can still be useful, but try and hold people accountable for finding a better solution of disposing or recycling their waste.
It will also be interesting and powerful to then see how the raw filament we produce from the waste can be used to create both art, as well as useful objects such as: banners, rugs, clip boards, containers, filament for 3D printing, and the list goes on.
