Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical day in my classroom involves a lot of time spent at learning centers. My students have opportunities to exercise their creativity, read, write, and practice math. All that's missing is a computer center with enough computers to accommodate a small group!
I'm a special education teacher to 4th grade students with mild to moderate learning disabilities in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
My school is a Title I school, and over 95% of its students receive free lunch.
My NYC public school students live in a neighborhood which contains NYC's largest low income housing community. In their day-to-day lives, some can see a lot of ugliness, and the majority of them find school a safe way to escape that. As their teacher, I recognize my students as smart, creative individuals who have the potential to shatter the "kid from the projects" stereotype and to move on and develop into well-educated productive members of society.
My Project
I am requesting Chromebooks for our classroom. This will allow me to have a technology station for students to practice literacy and math skills. Chromebooks are ideal for young students because they are lightweight, low-cost, and are able to provide students with various learning opportunities. They will allow the children to learn basic keyboarding skills so they can edit and print their writing. Students will also have the opportunity to use various computer programming applications to create their own programs/applications. Having enough computers for a small group to use them as a center will make a big difference in the number of minutes each child is able to interact with technology.
I want my students to have every opportunity to be successful in life.
These children, our future leaders, need to have the resources to build their technology skills. A computer station in my classroom will be a big step in the right direction!
