Can't Teach US Government Without a Map of the United States
My students need a U.S. and World map to learn about the geography of our country and our world.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Do's classroom raised $415

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A report released by National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and featured on USNews found that American high school students lack geography literacy in the United States. http://www.usnews.com/education/blogs/high-school-notes/2011/07/20/high-school-seniors-geography-scores-don't-improve
Our school is an Early College High School situated in the heart of Santa Ana.
Students who come from low-income families, underdeveloped homes and often are first generation immigrants study at NOVA Olive Crest in hopes for a better and brighter opportunity. Our students take eight classes on a block schedule with each class time going for 1.5 hours. The long class hour allows for more flexible learning, such as direct instruction, group learning and independent work. Our students are challenged everyday with their own personal shortcomings, but they show up to school with a smile on their faces willing to learn. Our school is a safe haven to all who wish to escape from the troubles beyond our school walls and teachers and administrators embrace the opportunity to provide them a safe and educated environment in every possible way.
My Project
As a first year teacher, I may be short on teaching experience and personal finances, but my creativity is limitless. Teaching Government has allowed me to tap into my technology skills, presenting lessons using Goggle Earth as my primary tool when discussing important geographic locations. Such discussions and needed geography visuals include locating Washington DC, pinpointing state capitols across the country and making connections and references with other foreign countries. However, due to glitchy wireless connection, I sometimes am not successful on going online to reveal maps when my cellphone tethering and hotspot service malfunctions. Yes, I connect my laptop by tethering it to my cellphone! With that said, a large, tangible US and World map would allow me to easily and instantly display a geographic location needed for my students.
Geography literacy is so important in the 21st century, especially to our students in America.
As students today rely heavily on googlemaps and GPS to guide them through their travels, I want to instill in them basic map reading skills and basic knowledge of our world's geography. They need to learn the location of our states, our country, our capitols, relative to our oceans and the rest of the world.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
