Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are passionate, talented, funny, and persevering. They have to be in order to survive in one of the worst neighborhoods in the South Bronx. Many come from broken homes, foster care, group homes, and family shelters for the homeless or abused. Despite these circumstances, my kids are eager to come to school and find a path out of their situations with the power of education. I have never met a stronger group of young men and women in my 20+years of teaching.

These students are so disadvantaged that many of them don't have access to the simplest supplies at home.

I want them to be exposed to as much as possible, so they don't fall behind in their future educational endeavors. They could have a very bleak outlook on what life has to offer them, but the amazing thing is, they don't. I strive every day to be a positive role model for them and reinforce the idea they can make a difference in their own lives with the power of education.

My Project

I am glad to provide my students with coffee, tea, hot chocolate, ice, and filtered water from my back office. My students love being able to make themselves a hot beverage or munch on ice while working on their college and career readiness and it lends a coffee house vibe to my room.

In the past, I prided myself on having students use regular coffee mugs they needed to wash to keep environmentally friendly, but Covid has changed all that.

Now we need disposable cups because of health risks associated with sharing mugs that may not be perfectly cleaned. At least the hot and cold cups I chose are made with recycled materials and the water filter fits on the faucet in the sink so that we can avoid plastic water bottles. I stocked up on coffee supplies at the beginning of the year but did not anticipate how many cups we'd go through.

We're on our last box of cups and without your help, we will soon be forced to stand with our mouth open under the coffee maker. (Well, not really, but you get the desperation!)

Providing my students with these cups and water filters will help them stay focused on their futures and provide them with a bit of comfort while working through their lessons.
