Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a low-income/high-poverty urban school district. Their experiences are limited. They are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom, with challenges including emotional trauma, a high mobility rate, and many other special needs.
Many of them are being raised in single-parent households, and 99% receive free lunch and breakfast.
My students are 70% Hispanic and 30% African-American. I have several ELL students in my class as well as special needs students. The majority of my students are far below the national and state standards in reading and math.
My Project
It would be great to give my students the opportunity to code their own robots.
Coding is the skill that all students growing up now should have and I would like to give that learning opportunity to my students.
I will offer an after school or before school opportunity for my students to take turns coming in and trying these robots out as well as use it in the classroom. We are planning a coding unit soon and these robots will make an exciting addition to the programming curriculum that we are using. My students will be exposed to more STEAM lessons and we will hopefully spark some interest in programming as a career choice in the future.
