My students need a laptop and an adapter for the projector so that they can visually see and learn what technology has to offer.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a first year technology teacher who teaches a diverse group of almost 600 students from grades Pre-K to 5. Our school is located in a high poverty area in a low-socioeconomic, urban neighborhood. My students come from very diverse backgrounds with many different learning styles.
My students include a large group of English language learners (ELL), students with learning and emotional disabilities, and students with very deficient reading skills.
Although my students are very motivated and knowledge-hungry, they do not have the proper skills and tools to succeed. Unlike their suburban neighbors who are just 10 miles away, many of them come to school with no basic supplies and no proper family support. In addition, our school is not as well equipped as their schools so it is very unfair to my students. The lack of available resources also makes the inequality between my students and those suburban neighbors much bigger---even though they are both being held to the same standards and take the same state assessments. Since most of my students do not have access to technology at home, I want to create a safe and nurturing environment where technology is easily accessible to them. I want to give them skills that they can utilize beyond the classroom walls.
My Project
I would like a laptop so that I can model the technology to the students properly. Even though each student has a computer in my computer lab, I do not have a laptop to model what I want to teach them. I have an outdated desktop that is very slow (it is so old, it has a floppy disk drive). My students spend more time waiting for me because they have a faster computer. Last week, I was introducing Google Apps for Education to a 4th grade class. My screen was still loading the Google sign-in screen while my students had already signed-in, created folders in their Google Drive, and uploaded 2 documents that they had been working on from their desktops. They completed it while I was giving the instructions verbally. This was not the optimal way to teach since a vast majority of my students are visual learners and some of them couldn't follow and complete the tasks. This caused many of my students to become frustrated and anxious. It was very unfair to them.
I believe that technology is essential to our everyday life and our future depends on it.
Students need the technological skills for school and life beyond the classroom walls. They need the skills necessary to compete in the real world—which includes many suburban graduates. Why make the inequality bigger if we can start closing the gap now?
