Help me give my students a fantastic online experience! While we are learning at home, I'd like to have the tools that will allow students to see me and our materials clearly.
Our school has almost 2100 students in a building that seemed crowded with 1500. As student numbers have rapidly increased, our ability to spend money on non-essentials has hit the wayside. Our school spends far less money per student per year than other high schools in the district.
We will be starting out the 2020-2021 school year at home this August carrying out distance learning for at least the first 6 weeks of the school year.
As we go, the school board will assess the situation and decide when we can return to the schools in our district.
Teaching from home will present a new challenge for teachers like me who are used to being in front of students, especially at the beginning of the school year, when it's crucial to create a sense of community.
My Project
With this project, I have included items to be used while distance learning. We're not sure when we will get back into the building, but I need to make use of all the time I have with my students.
Whether we are learning at school or at home, I have a job to do and my students need to be able to see me and our material.
I've included a webcam, headphones, and a wireless mouse in this project. In the spring, I used the camera that is built into my laptop and the picture wasn't very clear. I believe these items will help to reach students easier. I also included a seat cushion because I'll be sitting at my computer for long periods of time. In my classroom, I am usually on my feet, so sitting is going to be a lot different.
Once we are back in the classroom, we will be able to use the webcam for filming clear videos of our speeches and other assignments on Flipgrid. Headphones are always needed and the seat cushion will be sought after by students for a long time, I'm sure. I've also included an air purifier which says it can clean the air in a large room. This should ease worries once we're allowed back into the building,
I have also included stickers, which I plan to send to students along with bookmarks that I've been working on this summer. I know that in the past my students have loved receiving stickers so that they can decorate their water bottles or laptops. I'm hoping to connect with them and build our classroom community, even though we will start connecting virtually instead of together as a class.
