My Students
"I LOVE that story!" This is the reaction I get from my students every time I read them a story. At the end of every story I always end it with, "THE END!" And my students burst out with a loud applause and a cheer. The enthusiasm and excitement I witness every day during story time is priceless.
Books are an essential part of kindergarten.
Reading is fundamental in building vocabulary and comprehension. My students are curious and eager 5 year old students and they LOVE reading stories.
Our school is the only public school located in the downtown district. The majority of my students live in a high poverty neighborhood, living in SRO's (single room occupancy) with more than one family, transitional homes, etc. Our school is just a block away from the county jail. Despite the surrounding environment, my students come to school daily eager and ready to learn. The circumstances that these students face everyday does not affect the learning that happens in my classroom every day.
The majority of my students are English Language Learners and for most of them English is their 2nd language. Reading has become their best part of their day. Therefore, in my classroom, reading is my priority which I believe will lead to their future success.
My Project
In order for me to make reading come to life, I would LOVE some great resources. Reading comes to life with storytelling and active listening. With the purchase of student CD players and CD read along books, students can enjoy listening to stories independently. These listening libraries can build important reading skills such as fluency, reading comprehension, expression, and pacing. At this young age, students use pictures to tell the story. But with these read along books the stories come to life. Students can focus on concepts of print, story structure, listening, rhyming. Some of these story books include main concepts taught in kindergarten such as feelings and emotions, shapes, and colors. If I have these resources I will be able to provide support for students on a daily basis throughout the day. Story time is such a wonderful experience for my students. Think about it, in 5 years, over 100 children would have used the student CD players and read along books!!!
Research shows that listening to stories read aloud allow students to expand their vocabulary and build on their listening comprehension skills.
It is a valuable step in building a lifelong reader. The joy of reading begins at an early age. Please support my classroom by making reading an unforgettable experience for all my students. Thank you.
