Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My classroom is made up of 9th grade students. I teach intensive reading to students that with emotional and behavioral disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), intellectual disabilities as well as specific learning disabilities. Many of my students have limited cognitive abilities, mental disabilities, and attention spans making reading difficult for them. The school has 98% of the students on free or reduced lunch. The school is predominately Hispanic and African American. Most of my students struggle to read and as a result, hate reading. Having books that are of interest to them and that has life lessons embedded within will give them a passion to read where they once had a disdain for it.
Most of the students are below the poverty line and have little to no access to books at home.
If we had a class sets of books that students would actually like reading, it would show them that reading can be fun and that there is so much that can be garnered from a book. It would also allow students to view life from a different lens and see the adventures behind the pages. The headphones will help those who cannot handle holding a book listen to the book be read to them.
These books will help the students reach a level that they may not have otherwise. Having books will help better access their education and show them a new word..
