Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first grade students read fiction almost exclusively. For the past three years, I've been able to expose them to non-fiction reading using the Weekly Reader and Time for Kids. These glossy color magazines get the youngest most reluctant readers interested in non-fiction!

I teach in an inner city TITLE I school.

All of the students at my school are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students are English Language Learners. Early readers rely on photographs and pictures to learn new words and vocabulary. The children are eager to learn, but many of them depend exclusively on the classroom books for all of their reading material.

My Project

Both the Weekly Reader and Time for Kids are age appropriate magazines that are of high interest to first graders! Each magazine covers subjects including science (plants, animals, dental health, and summer safety), and social studies (holidays such as Columbus Day, President's Day and Memorial Day as well as community workers.) The subscription includes a large teacher's edition of the magazine that allows the class to do choral reading! Time for Kids also includes a current events issue once a month. Both magazines have curriculum extensions that can be used to extend thinking. They also come with corresponding worksheets that correlate to the subject matter.

Your generosity will enable my first grade class to be exposed to high quality non-fiction reading about interesting, grade level topics.

Each student brings their magazine home to share with their family, which encourages the home-school connection. This year we've had the most drastic cuts to our education budget. Without your support, the children will go without this wonderful resource!
