Can You Make My Organic Students Melt With Envy?

My students need this melting point apparatus and accessories to safely obtain melting points of organic compounds.

My Students

Right now the only way my students have to obtain a reasonable melting point is by using a hot oil bath. They need a safer way to obtain their data without the risk of burns.

Students in my AP Chemistry class and those taking an Independent Study in Organic Chemistry will benefit from this apparatus.

These are very bright students who are challenging themselves in courses that aren't always offered at most high schools. They attend a rural, public high school in NY that has a high rate of poverty and low socioeconomic status.

My Project

These students are able to perform the labs, but it is generally a challenge to identify what they have produced (especially when you start and end with a white powder/crystals). We can say, for example, that they have made aspirin... but we don't know for sure. Having an accurate melting point apparatus would permit them to determine whether they have synthesized the appropriate product or whether they still have starting material. Currently they are using a hot oil bath which poses a risk from burns. This melting point apparatus will eliminate that hazard as well as permit 3 samples to be done simultaneously. With the required software they will also be able to graph their data in real-time as it's being obtained.

Students will be afforded the opportunity to positively identify what they have synthesized - safely - with this apparatus.

It is very rewarding to these students to know that they have performed a lab correctly and obtained what they were supposed to!
