My Students

Over half of the students in our band program are from low income households. Being a part of extra curricular activities usually isn’t an option for them, due to the costs associated with participating. Being in the band gives these students opportunities to be a part of a performance team. Our students don't just learn to play instruments and march, they learn discipline, leadership, responsibility, time-management, flexibility, respect, and sacrifice.

Even though life has "tossed" our band students lots of curve balls, they have never given up!

In spite of all the financial challenges our students face, we LOVE their tenacity and dedication. It's been a joy to watch them work together, and create a sense of family. The older band students are outstanding leadership examples to the underclassmen.

My Project

An important part of the band program is the Color Guard. The WHS Color Guard has tripled in size in just one year! I'm excited about the enthusiasm for our performance art, but I'm concerned about how I will provide music for their rehearsals. Our Guard is in need of a new wireless speaker they can use for rehearsals and competitions. Each week you will find them partnered with the Bulldog Marching Band, and performing at half-time during Friday night football games. They also compete with the band in their marching band competitions throughout the fall season. During the spring semester, the WHS Color Guard also competes in their own Winter Guard competitions with other groups from around the state.

Carrying the colors at parades, cheering at pep rallies, performing for the community--this group really does it all!

They are talented, bright, and busy, and they never miss an opportunity to perform. Despite their growth in numbers, enthusiasm, and talent, the WHS Color Guard is still lacking in one major area...Funding!
