Can You Hear the Music Now?

My Students

Have you ever been captivated by a piece of music because you could hear the faintest traces of sound? What happens when this opening is followed by a strong and powerful theme? In my classroom, there is little difference in the nuance of these sounds.

As the music teacher, I have the opportunity to work with every student in the school at least once a week.

My school is a low income, small neighborhood school that is home to nearly five hundred students from all over the world. Our students include special needs children with orthopedic and vision impairments. Every month my students are introduced to a new composer. Although the music is often something with which the students are unfamiliar, many of them seem to respond positively to hearing new and different works. They have been very inquisitive and have even made requests for some of the big classical composers. I love that they are curious and want to know more about these mysterious musicians and composers of the past.

My Project

We are currently using a 'jambox' that has a non-functional cassette deck, a cd-player, and a radio. Changing discs for different listening examples and waiting for the player to recognize the tracks takes time and attention away from the students. Because our school is home to students from around the globe, it is important that they hear music from every corner of the world. The most convenient and accessible way to find and present this music is with a device like the iPod and a more substantial speaker or sound system. Being able to use an iPod with such a large capacity will allow me to store all of the recorded materials provided with our textbook series, as well as materials that might not be readily available beyond the Internet. In addition to storing these materials, this device provides the convenience of creating playlists for specific classes or units. Presenting musical comparisons and different examples will be much more effective.

We were recently listening to a work which begins with a very soft, low, and ominous sound before transitioning to a loud, strong, and triumphant passage.

The details of this work were lost due to our playback device and speaker system. Ultimately, I will be able to present a broader scope of music to my students with the iPod and my students will be able to hear the subtleties of this music with a new speaker system.
