This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is at the crossroads of the world. We service students primarily from the surrounding neighborhood, but they represent a global population of recently arrived immigrants from all across the world. They come to us seeking the opportunity to learn and share in the American promise.
We are a small school housed within a campus of many small schools.
As new students to the United States, they face many difficulties. They not only face an up-hill struggle to learn the subject matter, but must also to acclimate to a new culture, language and environment.
In order to overcome the language and cultural barriers, we create lessons designed to engage and enrich the learning experience in every discipline, with an emphasis on language skills. We encourage and foster cooperation and collaboration among all students and staff thus creating a school-wide learning environment of mutual respect and understanding of diverse cultures.
My Project
As students progress through the various units, they are asked to present what they have learned with their teachers and classmates in English and the student's native tongue. To better learn and understand English, we use DVD videos and CD audio recordings. In this way students can hear the proper pronunciation of English words from various sources as well as record their own presentations to use as learning tools.
Presently we have video camcorder, thanks to DonorsChoose, so we can record classroom activities and presentations. We now need a way for students to clearly hear the DVD's and CD's from different parts of the room, or at different listening stations. Having access to speakers will greatly facilitate the acquisition of the English language skills they will need for college.
