My Students

I am the music teacher for 485 children in grades K-5. We are a Title 1 school. This year, approximately 45% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. We have an increasing population of homeless children as well as an increasing number of students for whom English is not their first language.

We are very fortunate in our school division that every child has one 45 minute music class every week, but for many of these children, that music class is their only exposure to "real" musical instruments.

I don't have a budget to purchase classroom instruments, but thanks to Donors Choose and other grants I have written, I am able to make wonderful instruments available for my students to use when they come to their weekly music class.

If you visited my music classroom, the first thing you might notice is that there is very little furniture, because my students need room to dance and play instruments, as well as sing and listen. It is so important that students are able to make music, thereby becoming musicians themselves!

My Project

I can't hear you! Speak up! Have you ever been in front of an audience and either not had a microphone to use, or else the microphone was not doing a very good job of amplifying your voice? Imagine being an elementary school-age child and having that happen. That can devastate a child!

We have a wonderful tradition of having every child perform at some point during the school year, in a grade level program for the parents and student body.

These performances are the highlight of the school year and are eagerly anticipated, not only by the performers but by the student body audience and faculty and staff.

The grade level performances give the parents an opportunity to see what their children are learning in their weekly music class.

It takes so much courage for a little child to even want to sing a solo, or in a small group, in front of an audience. It is discouraging when the microphone is unreliable or doesn't properly amplify his/her voice. These two new microphones are a good quality and will solve this problem, so that every solo and every speaking part in a grade level performance can be clearly heard by everyone. These microphones will serve us for a very long time and will bring so much pleasure to our school.
