This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a class of eager, curious, and creative young learners in a public, title one school in California. They are excited and determined to learn a second language!

I am very fortunate to have 48 wonderful first graders!

Most of them have been together since kindergarten due to their participation in the dual language program at our school. They are eager to learn in two languages and know very well why being bilingual is awesome. Our school is a title 1 school that prioritizes serving the students within the area. We have a unique curriculum that revolves around science. We strive to provide students with first-hand experiences around science to push students' level of thinking and questioning. We transfer these same goals to the rest of our curriculum to allow students to make connections and build a solid learning foundation.

My Project

By providing my classroom with a portable speaker, my students would have access to over 200 learning songs, dances, and compositions in Spanish. A portable speaker will allow me to access the music from different sections of the classroom. We can even use it during physical education!

Using music would benefit my students by: helping them access difficult academic concepts and skills, exposing them to different kinds of music, teaching them beat and rhythm, and developing an appreciation to music and dance in Spanish.

Music is an engaging way of teaching a new language.
