This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Do you remember when you first learned to read? How amazing it sounded to hear the words on the page coming out of your mouth? Each day, I get to see thirty first graders enthralled with their growing reading abilities. Our classroom is in an urban school in northern Illinois. Nearly all of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and over half of my students are English Language Learners. Very few of my students have someone who can read with them at home, yet they are so excited to share their newfound reading skills with friends, family, and teachers - or anyone else who will listen!

But what do you get when thirty students are sounding out words, exploring sounds, and reading (or rereading!) their favorite stories - all at the same time? A very enthusiastic, albeit slightly noisy, classroom!

With a class set of whisper phones, my students will be able to whisper into a tube that amplifies their voice into their ear. A slight whisper turns into an audible sound, without distracting others. Mispronounced letter sounds are suddenly more noticeable, calling each student's attention to producing a correct sound. Self-correcting these errors can lead to being a fluent, accurate reader. Students remain focused, more able to concentrate while reading, and more aware of the sounds they are producing. These benefits are critically important to my students, particularly my English Language Learners.
