This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students mirror the world.

They come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds and bring with them special knowledge and tools they have acquired from their experiences.

They are well-versed in culture and are eager to pick up Spanish as their second or third language so they can communicate with many people in their community.

Have you ever heard someone say, "I took Spanish in high school but I couldn't tell you a thing!" As a high school Spanish teacher, that is my biggest fear; so we have changed our methods. Based on the research, students learn languages best by using them. Gone are the days of conjugation charts and fill-in-the-blanks. They have been replaced by authentic tasks in which the students speak, listen, read, and write. Because it is impossible to speak with each student during the class period I have incorporated new technology that allows students to have interpersonal conversations with me through a computer. They can hear me speaking to them and they respond to the prompts appropriately.

Without a language lab in the school, all speaking activities are happening in the classroom with students sitting in close proximity to each other. Headphones with microphones will capture students' voices while blocking out background noise, allowing me to hear them clearly.

These headphones will be used multiple times a week in my classes. The goal is that they become comfortable using Spanish in the classroom so that they can then continue to use it outside of school in real-life situations. You never know, they just might become the nurse/lawyer/doctor/mechanic that will be able to serve you in both languages!
