Can You Hear Me? Deaf Students Seek Technology!

My students need 12 iPad cases to preserve the iPads that they use each day for research, reading, and math skills practice. They also need 12 headphones for the iPads.

My Students

Imagine that you cannot hear. This is daily life for my deaf and hard of hearing students. We have 12 iPads for reading, but they already have cracks in them. We'd like to preserve our technology, with iPad cases so that we can continue to read books and listen to stories with 12 headphones. Thanks!

My students are deaf and hard of hearing, with varying degrees of hearing loss.

They use cochlear implants and hearing aids to help them optimize their residual hearing. Due to their deafness, they have significant delays in language, reading, and writing. My students range from 12 years in age to 16 years in age in a self-contained middle school classroom.

My Project

My students LOVE to read on the iPads on an app called Raz Kids!! This app is connected to Reading A-Z.com We use it almost every day in the classroom, and they are able to log on and use it at home, too. What's great about this app is that they can read the stories themselves, or they can have the stories read to them as they listen. This is optimal for my students because of their language and reading delays. This app really helps them improve their reading comprehension skills, which they desperately need! The app tests their knowledge of the stories with 5-10 question quizzes at the end of the books. The books are on their reading level, and I just love it when they have access to the reading material. The iPads are a few years old now, and have some wear and tear on them. I'd like to preserve the existing technology in our classroom by obtaining the iPad cases. We have three very old headphone sets in our classroom, which is not enough for all the kids to use.

A generous donation to our classroom of the iPad cases and the headphones will help my students so much.

It will enable them to continue to use the much-sought-after technology in the classroom by preserving the existing iPads that they use for reading, research, and math skills practice. My students love to read, and the iPads give them access to books on their reading level, so they can continue to improve. The headphones will enable them to listen to the stories.
