My Students
For students who struggle with reading, acquiring information through print is a daunting task that is often met with failure. My struggling readers decode every word, one at a time, and often lose the gist of what they are reading.
My students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with substantial reading deficits, from all over Boston, in order to get a free education from our school.
We are a charter school that provides structure and fundamental academic preparation in order to get students to college.
More specific to the students I work with daily, each comes with reading deficits of three to four grade levels. They bring joy and energy to class, but also histories of repeated academic failures. They struggle with reading and this affects every aspect of their life at school.
My Project
Our school is creating an access center for students. In this center, students can utilize assistive technology to ease the learning process. I am requesting donations in order to provide headphones for my students to be able to access their texts through audio.
Students will be able to come to the Access Center and listen to, as well as download, audio versions of text from the core curriculum. These combined resources will introduce a needed resource to a population of students who are struggling to stay afloat as they learn the skills of reading.
Donating to this project will level the playing field for marginalized students.
They will have access to texts that, without audio, present themselves as barriers to content. Your donations will work to hold students while they are still developing decoding and fluency skills.
