Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I read a poem years ago that has continued to resonate with me after all these years. It is called "Cause I Ain't Got A Pencil." It talks about a student's daily struggles just to get to school, only to be fussed at by a teacher for not having a pencil. I am thankful for my students coming to school each day and never want them to feel defeated over a pencil.

Many of my students need school supplies.

Many days, my students will sit quietly, not completing their tasks. When I ask my students if they need a pencil, they always answer yes. I want to have a plethora of pencils in each classroom so my students will never have to ask for a pencil, feel embarrassed because they are unprepared, etc.

Many of our students come from various backgrounds. Some get ready in the morning on their own, care for other siblings, frequently move around, have dealt with illness, etc. With this being said, our students go through so much before they even enter the school, and the least I can do to support their learning is to provide them with a pencil. It is a small gesture to show my students that I, too, am vested in their knowledge and will do my part to help them succeed.
