My Students

My students consist of 6th, 7th and 8th graders that attend science within a self-contained classroom.

Each day we strive to teach through a multitude of modalities and love to use visual aids/hands within our classroom.

My students consist of predominantly Emotionally Disturbed, Learning Disabled, and Traumatic Brain Injury students, however, we never let their disabilities define them or let those disabilities stand in our way. Within our classroom, we always set the bar high and expect nothing but greatness.

My Project

Recently, I read a poem entitled, "Cause I Ain't Got a Pencil" by Joshua T. Dickerson. This poem hit so close to home. Many of my students have personal daily struggles. They finally arrive at school, many times late and unkept. Then, when they sit down, you tell them to take out their notebook and a pencil. Their response, "I don't have them." We, as teachers, often become upset at the idea that the child is unprepared. However, after reading this poem, I realized that many times it's not their fault.

I want my students to come to school excited to learn.

I never want my students to be discouraged, especially over not having a pen or pencil. I previously had a project funded and we received hundreds of pencils. All of those pencils have now gone to new homes and we now need to restock! My goal is to always have a bin full of sharpened pencils and pens under this poster. This poster, that is now displayed in my classroom is a reminder, that it's not only our responsibility as teachers to educate, but to also do whatever it takes to help our students be successful. That starts with supplying everyone with pencils!

Below is the poem so you don't have to Google it:

Cause I Ain't Got a Pencil

by Joshua T. Dickerson

I woke myself up

Because we ain't got an alarm clock

Dug in the dirty clothes basket,

Cause ain't nobody washed my uniform

Brushed my teeth in the dark,

Cause the lights ain't on

Even got my baby sister ready,

Cause my mama wasn't home.

Got us both to school on time,

To eat us a good breakfast.

Then when I got to class the teacher fussed

Cause I ain't got a pencil.
