In our Pre-K classes we believe that young children learn best through active learning which requires many hands-on activities. We are lucky to have a beautiful school with lots of materials in the classroom, but our outdoor learning environment is lacking in variety and impact. Additionally, our students, who are high poverty, do not often have safe places in which to play outside in their neighborhoods. They are typically very limited in their knowledge of nature and the outdoors. Most of our students have never had the chance to plant a seed and watch it grow or know why it is important to feed birds, or what role insects play in our environment. Although we study these things in the classroom, bringing them to life in the outdoors would also bring them to life in our children's experience and show them a practical application to the classroom lessons. Last year I was able to obtain a grant to create a 12’x12’ raised bed garden in our school courtyard, fill it with dirt and plant a few plants. To expand upon the gardening experience of my students and the garden, I would like to teach them about composting. I am requesting a “Rolypig” Composter (a composting bin created to look like a giant pig) in which to recycle bedding from our classroom pets, weeds that we pull in our courtyard and uneaten fruit and vegetable scraps from our school lunches. The students can use this compost to enrich our garden in a natural and healthy way. By donating the Rolypig Composter you will have a lasting impact by helping our preschoolers to not only learn about care of our earth but by extending and enriching their classroom experiences by learning to "Dig Gardening"!
