Can We Wiggle While We Work?

My students need 15 Air Stability Wobble Cushions to provide them opportunities for movement while learning without distracting their peers.

My Students

I work in urban-city school. Many of my students are living at or below the poverty line, and 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Even the most basic materials are in short supply, which means reaching into my own pocket every year even for things such as paper and pencils. Despite the obstacles, my students come to school eager to learn each day. There is never a dull moment in our classroom, and my students inspire me with their endless supply of energy and optimism in the face of so many inherent challenges.

My Project

Have you ever tried sitting in a hard plastic chair for extended periods of time while trying to focus on the task at hand? This is difficult for adults, which is why professional offices frequently provide specialized chairs and work centers in order to increase productivity. My students must sit on a daily basis, and they must do so without the special chairs, desks, or keyboards of the adult office space while simultaneously dealing with the inherent distractions of youth. I already provide "Brain Breaks," where we get up and move about before beginning a new lesson or activity, but I would also like to provide them alternative seating options that have been shown to improve concentration and performance. I have 10 Wobble Cushions in the classroom and I have witnessed the difference it makes in my students who need that movement. These additional cushions would allow all students the movement their bodies need without distracting their peers.

I have 25 active 4th graders and 10 Wobble Cushions to share.

These Wobble Cushions are always in use and always requested, and I see the way each user remains more focused on learning when provided the non-disruptive movement afforded by the Wobble Cushion. With the addition of 15 Wobble Cushions, each student would have a cushion and distractions and non-learning breaks will be minimized, thus providing essentially an extra period of learning that is now consumed by these distractions and/or breaks.
