My Students

Hello everyone, I am a NYC High School Biology teacher. My classes are generally composed of freshman and sophomore students. These students are some of the brightest teens in NYC. Their curiosity is insatiable, yet we do not always have the technology available to quench their thirst for knowledge.

And that is a shame as we now live in a highly technological era.

The students in my classes are computer savvy, yet we do not have computers in any of the classrooms for students to use, either to look up information, to watch a video or to print out their homework. Projectors have to be shared between teachers as does the ancient TV we all share. I do so love the reaction of the students as I push the cart with this TV down the hall. I forget that so many of them don't recognize a TV that is as wide as it is DEEP! That it is old is irrelevant because it still works! That there is one TV to share amongst 12 teachers is ridiculous.

My Project

In order to solve this problem, and guarantee that my students, and other science classes as well, have access to this type of media, I am asking for your help to purchase an Sony LED HD TV. This television will be shared amongst the department and will allow us to more meaningfully present media files. We can connect the TV to a microscope and look at cells dividing or an amoeba ingesting some food. We can connect it to the DVD player and watch the LIFE or PLANET EARTH series, which are beautifully done and educationally rich in content. But the google ready TV can also allow teachers to connect to the Internet and stream a movie or video clip online! Can you not ask for an experience that is more representative of the world these students will one day be entering!

So I am asking for your help to create an educational environment that is similar to the kinds of workplaces my students will one day be joining!
