Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students come from difficult family lives and when they come to school I hope they have a great day not only in their learning journey, but in their own feelings about themselves. I hope that they value who they are and what they bring to the table. Many of my students enjoy taking breaks between work time, and show such excitement when they get to use new materials such as the kinetic sand, or slime. Their faces light up with wonder and excitement when I bring out a new item for them to use as a break option.
My students want to make connections with me not only as their teacher but their friend.
One way we do that is that we talk about their lives, and their experiences outside of school during their break time. Many of them enjoy drawing, and are very artistic and would love some new sparkle markers to create some new ideas with.
My students can enjoy their learning journey but I realize that when I make learning accessible for them, such as with graphic organizers, or different writing prompts/journals they show more of an excitement about taking ownership in their work and where they currently are in their learning.
All in all, my students thrive when I give them choices and this is what my project is all about. Getting my students what they need, giving them choice in their break options, tailoring the learning to their level, meeting them where they are, and celebrating wherever they go.
