My students have been asking me this question for weeks now. They heard about the book from an older friend, and the story of Jay Gatsby, an entrepreneurial, ambitious man from an impoverished background, resonated with them.
My 50 Advanced Placement students are anxiously awaiting their college acceptance letters. But I know, and many of them realize, too, that when they get to college they will struggle for not having had the same exposure to literature as many of their wealthier peers.
I would love to read The Great Gatsby with my AP classes. It is a novel that exposes students to rich, classic writing and to an unfamiliar, fascinating era. The book also offers the opportunity for the kind of deep study of the structure, sound and meaning of language that college-bound students must engage in.
Our school used to have class sets of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, but over many years of use, the books have disappeared or deteriorated. My colleague is using the remaining books right now, and last week her student came to class with the best excuse ever for not finishing the reading: Chapter Two had been torn out from the book. Many novels from our school’s bookroom have met the same fate --there are few reliable class sets of novels left.
Another 60 copies of The Great Gatsby will make a huge difference for my students and myself. Two classes will be able to read the novel at the same time, and I will be able to loan the sets to other responsible teachers for their classes to read and take care of. Thank you for ensuring that many subsequent classes of students can participate in the powerful discussions of wealth, dreams, and self-creation that arise from reading this novel.
