Can We Grow Plants Without Soil?

My Project

Many students are familiar with growing plants traditionally in soil in their garden or perhaps in a pot on their patio. Our students want to explore growing plants without soil - a hydroponic garden! As part of our life science class this year, we are learning about photosynthesis, cell respiration, and how plants grow. Hydroponics offer a unique experience for students to see plants growing, almost magically, without soil.

Students will be designing their own experiments to grow green bean plants hydroponically and will choose from variables such as which fertilizers we use, the pH of their water, and the growing medium.

We will also compare different hydroponics methods: is it better to use a simple wick method, or are their results different using a water pump method?

Students will follow the growth of their plant through its life cycle: from watching their seeds sprout, to growing leaves, flowering, and hopefully fruiting into delicious green beans to pick. My students have already been collecting recycled 2 liter bottles to use as our first hydroponic "pots", but we need supplies to get our project going! Students will grow as scientists as they design these experiments and follow through over the course of the school year.
