Help me give my students 15 CASIO fx-300 ES Plus Scientific Calculators. This would give me enough for a class of 30 students.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Coley's classroom raised $291
This project is fully funded
My Students
I teach Algebra 1 and lower level Geometry. Most of my students in these classes have not had a good experience with mathematics (until this year, I hope!). I believe that a good functioning calculator will get rid of some frustration that math has been giving them. If I have calculators that are all the same (rather than a hodgepodge of calculators that can do various levels of calculations) I think it will put them at ease as they learn how to use them.
My Project
I think having the same calculator being used by all students in my 5 classes of Algebra and Geometry will go along way to solve an equity issue in my classroom. Having a bunch of different calculators is challenging for students. Some have math type and some have "pretty print." Some can do fractions. Some can give answers as decimals or fractions, etc. Students will race to get the "good" calculators at the beginning of class. Some calculators are so "not user-friendly" that it only adds to the frustration that some of the students already have about mathematics. I would like a "level" playing field in my classroom.
