This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I hear this question all the time: "Can I borrow a guitar?" There are 105 students in the Guitar classes and over 500 students in Music Appreciation classes. Our high school is in a large metropolitan city with 59.5 percent described as low income students and a special education population of five percent. THe majority of our students qualify for the free lunch program.
I hear this question constantly: "Can I borrow a guitar?" Unfortunately, all of the guitars in the guitar department have to stay in the building because they are used by multiple classes. Many of our music majors take Guitar Class as an extra music class. This class helps them learn chord structure and definitely improves their aural musicianship skills. These skills are crucial in their music development and in their college auditions. Our music majors have been accepted into many of the best music colleges across the nation. We want to continue this trend. Many of our students can barely afford to buy their own instrument and pay for private lessons. To ask them to buy a guitar as well would be very difficult.
When a student asks, "Can I borrow a guitar?" I would love to say. . . "YES, I just happen to have one available." I am asking for one guitar and one gig bag to protect the guitar during transport. This setup would benefit the students who are in multiple performance classes and cannot afford to buy a guitar. This guitar setup would also help our college bound music students as they develop their musical ability.
I am always looking for ways to help my students. I ask a lot of them, and I do the best to provide for them in return. Your participation in this project will give many of my students an extra boost in their music development.
