This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is located in a high-need area. An overwhelming majority of our families are living at or below the poverty level.
My 5th grade students are eager to learn but are reading and writing substantially below grade level.
Many have special needs and/or are English language learners.
In an attempt to advance student reading and writing ability, my school has adopted a balanced literacy approach. We hope to improve literacy and ensure our students with every opportunity that a quality education can provide.
My Project
"Can I look it up?" is the question I hear time and time again in my classroom. My answer is almost automatically a resounding "Yes!" Until...on second thought...what will they look it up on?
Though our kids are much more technologically advanced than we were at their age, they still lack the resources (even given the option to use their cell phones) to research and to gather information.
My hope is to provide students with the means to satisfy their curiosity and their quest for information and knowledge. Currently, we have two desktop computers in our classroom. A few of the students have cell phones that they can use for research and I will often allow the students to use my laptop. We try to max out the number of students at 4-5 per device, but that is not always feasible. There are simply too many students and not enough resources.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
